Newsletter Help

By far, the most common problem we hear about is that someone who is subscribed to our newsletter is not receiving it. To troubleshoot this issue, please check the following.

  1. Are you really subscribed?

There are two ways to verify if you are subscribed to our newsletter.

First, our newsletter system automatically sends out a subscription and password reminder on the first day of every month. The subject line will be, "advent-hope.org mailing list memberships reminder". If you received a message like this in the last 30 days, then you are subscribed.

Second, you can visit the "Subscribing to WeeklyUpdate" section on our Weekly Update List Info page and re-subscribe yourself. If you are already subscribed, you will then receive an email message entitled, "Mailman privacy alert". Do not be alarmed. The first paragraph of the message will inform you that you are already subscribed to this mailing list.

  2. Are you receiving the newsletter but overlooking it?

Our newsletter is usually sent once per week on Wednesday or Thursday, but sometimes there are exceptions. If you do not receive our newsletter for two weeks in a row or longer, then it is likely that there really is a problem.

To verify that you are not overlooking our newsletter when it comes, please look through your inbox. Our newsletter has the following information which may help you in your search:

    • From: newsletter@advent-hope.org
    • To: weeklyupdate@advent-hope.org
    • Subject: Advent HOPE Weekly Update ~ <MONTH NAME> <NUMERIC DATE>
    • List-ID: weeklyupdate_advent-hope.org.advent-hope.org

Please note: The <MONTH NAME> and <NUMERIC DATE> in the Subject line of each newsletter refer to the Sabbath immediately following when the newsletter was sent. In other words, it is normal for the Subject line to refer to a future date!

  3. Is our newsletter being treated as Spam?

Most email providers such as Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL have active Spam detection and filtering tools. Some messages are conclusively identifed as Spam and deleted before you ever see them. Other messages probably are or might be Spam and are put into a special Spam folder (sometimes called Bulk Mail) so you can decide for sure.

Unfortunately, many Spam filtering systems erroneously interpret newsletters as Spam. So, if you are not receiving our newsletters, please check your Spam or Bulk Mail folder. Email providers have various ways to notify them of messages that should not be interpreted as Spam. If you are unsure how to do this, please check with your email provider.

Often it is sufficient to add our newsletter@advent-hope.org email address to your Address Book.

  4. Is all email from our servers being blocked?

NOTE: This step is to be considered as a last resort. The situation described below is possible, but rare.

In effort to combat Spam, Internet and Email Service Providers actively try to detect where the highest amounts of Spam are coming from. These sources often get added to a "Blacklist", and all email from those sources is automatically rejected, whether or not it actually is Spam.

Unfortunately, those who send Spam messages are very clever, and sometimes a legitimate email source will be incorrectly added to a Blacklist due to Spammer activity. If you are not receiving any emails that end in "@advent-hope.org", it is possible that our email server is the victim of a Blacklist.

To verify if this may be occurring, you can ask other Advent HOPE attendees who have the same email provider as you. If Advent HOPE's server has been blacklisted, then they will be experiencing the same problem. (Please note: If they are receiving messages ending in "@advent-hope.org", then the problem is not due to a Blacklist.)

Or, you may contact your Internet or Email Service Provider directly. Ask if the domain "advent-hope.org" or the IP address 74.54.162.121 is on their Blacklist. If it is, kindly ask them to please remove it. If they insist that a System Administrator be the one to contact them, then please Contact us and let us know what you have tried, whom you spoke with, and any other pertinent information.

If you have tried all of the above and you still are not receiving the Advent HOPE newsletter, please report this problem using our Contact form. When reporting issues, please be very descriptive of what you are experiencing, what you have tried in order to remedy it, and the text of any error messages you are receiving. Thank you!
